In celebration of World Occupational Therapy Day, the Occupational Therapy team of SRCC CENTRE’S Rehab. Dept. conducted an engaging awareness session titled “Building Independence – Helping Children Master Daily Life Skills”, tailored for parents of children with special needs. Aligned with the global theme “O.T. in Action,” the session highlighted the vital role of occupational therapy in fostering functional independence and enhancing the quality of life for children with developmental challenges. Through interactive discussions and practical demonstrations, the session emphasized how occupational therapists empower children to actively participate in daily routines by developing essential self-care and adaptive skills. Key topics included the importance of nurturing independence from an early age, understanding developmental milestones in self-care such as dressing, feeding, grooming, and toileting, recognizing common challenges that impact confidence and growth, and implementing practical home-based strategies like visual schedules, task breakdowns, positive reinforcement, and creating supportive environments. The session began with an informative talk by the Occupational Therapy team and transitioned into an open discussion, where parents shared personal experiences and received individualized guidance. Therapists addressed specific concerns and demonstrated simple, actionable activities that parents could incorporate into daily routines to promote self-reliance. With 13 parents in attendance, the session reflected strong engagement and was well-received for its hands-on strategies and valuable insights. The event concluded with a resonant message: occupational therapy is not just about treatment — it’s about empowerment, helping every child unlock their potential, one skill at a time.
